DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES
Kerala
is blessed with the most productive part of the Arabian
Sea. The estimated marine Fishery potential of
the state is as high as 5.17 lakh tonnes. Inland Water
Resources also contribute much to the fishery wealth
of the state.
The
Department of Fisheries, governed by the Minister for
Fisheries, is considered to be one of the most important
productive and developmental sectors of the state. It
has a great role to play in the economy of Kerala. About
3 percent of the economy is attributed to the Fisheries,
which shows its immense potential and resourcefulness.
The
Chief Executive, responsible for Fisheries in the Government
is the Secretary to the Government (Fisheries). All
the development and management programmes envisaged
by the Government in the fisheries sector are being
implemented by the State Department of Fisheries. The
Department of Fisheries is headed by the Director of
Fisheries.
